Viscoelastic effect on nucleation in semidilute polymer solutions

چکیده
We study the growth of droplets consisting mostly of solvent in a metastable semidilute polymer solution. We introduce a modified Gibb~Thomson relation at the interface which accounts for viscoelastic effects. The growth is much decelerated when the radius is shorter than a long viscoelastic length. Not enough attention has yet been paid to nucleation phenomena in polymeric

Interface motion in semidilute polymer solutions
Linear viscoelastic effects are examined in semidilute polymer solutions in macroscopic two-phase coexistence. If the temperature T or the pressure p is oscillated in time, the interface motion exhibits gel-like behavior at high frequencies and fluid-like behavior at low frequencies. We also study transient relaxation after a step-wise change of T or p. We

Rheological studies were performed with aqueous salt solutions of viscoelastic cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride (EHAC) and its mixtures with hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide. The solutions of surfactant itself above the concentration of crossover of wormlike micelles exhibit two regions of rheological response. In the first region, they behave like poly...
متن کاملNucleation of the crystalline phase of proteins in the presence of semidilute non-adsorbing polymer
Starting from a protein solution which is metastable with respect to the crystalline phase, the effect of adding semidilute non-adsorbing polymer is considered. It is found to increase the chemical potential of the protein by a few tenths of kT, which may be enough to lower the barrier to nucleation of the crystalline phase by enough to allow crystallisation. It is also shown that assuming that...
متن کاملEffect of Polymer Grade and Plasticizer Molecular Weights on Viscoelastic Behavior of Coating Solutions
Film coating solutions containing different grades of HPMC (E5, E15 and E50) with and without polyethylene glycol (with various molecular weights) were examined by an oscillatory method, using Haake CV 100 rheometer. Fundamental rheological parameters (?, G? and G² ) were measured over the frequency range from 0.04 to 2 Hz. The variation with frequency of the loss tangent (a ratio of viscous to...
متن کاملTheory of polymer relaxation times in semidilute solutions. I : mode relaxation
The rate at which the intemal mode of motion of the strained polymer chains in semidilute solutions relaxes is calculated as a function of concentration. The excluded-volume and hydrodynamic interactions are taken into account. Gradual approach to the behavior of ideal chains due to the screening effect is demonstrated explicitly.
